Description
Summary:Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (OM) is a chronic incurable disease which will be suffered for a lifetime, but is uncontrollable to prevent complications. A good knowledge about management of disease is highly needed to avoid complications. One of the ways to increase the knowledge is through the counseling program with the family centered care method in which the counseling is given to the client and the family members simultaneously so that the family gives support to the client in managing the dis.~ase. This study was purposed to prove the influence of counseling on the family centered care toward self efficacy and quality of life as well as to prove the relation between self efficacy and quality of life of the patients suffered from Type 2 Diabetes mellitus. The type of this study was quasy-experimental conducted with non-randomized control group pretest and posttest design. In this study, the treatment group had been given the counseling on the family centered care, whereas the control group had not. The result of research showed a significant difference between self efficacy and quality of life between treatment and control group shown by the result of Mann-Whitney's test on self efficacy Z 1.978 (p = 0.048), whereas on quality of life Z -2.722 (p = 0.006). Moreover, there is a positive relation between self efficacy and quality of life. The result of Spearman's Rank test on the treatment group showed that rs 0.591 (p = 0.016). The conclusion of this study was that giving counseling on the family centered care has been more significantly proven to increase the self efficacy and quality of life of patients with Type 2 Diabetes mellitus than those without counseling. Besides, there was another evidence showing that there was a relation between self efficacy and quality of life; if self efficacy increased, quality of life would also increase. Therefore, the nurses should develop the method of family centered care so that the management of Diabetes mellitus can also be developed independently with the family support. Moreover, the further study should be done to strengthen the concept of family centered care in managing Type 2 Diabetes mellitus sufferers by modifying the assessment instrument.
