Description
Summary:Sibling rivalry is one problem that may occur in preschool age. Parents has an important role to manage their child. This study is aim to analyse correlation between parenting style with incident of sibling rivalry. Design used in this study was cross sectional. The location was at YKK 1 Kindergarten, Bangkalan Regency, with total sample 30 respondents. Samples were taken using purposive sampling that was based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. The independent variable was parenting style. Parenting consists of three types: democratic, authoritarian and permissive. Dependent variable was incident of sibling rivalry. Data were collected using questionnaire. Data were analyzed using Spearman rho test, with significance level at a ≤ 0,05. The result showed that most (57%) of preschool age children of YKK 1 Kindergarten were experienced medium incident of sibling rivalry, while 30% were at low incident of sibling rivalry and 13% at high incident of sibling rivalry. Majority of parents applied democratic parenting style. There was correlation between parenting style and incident of sibling rivalry (p=0,002; r=-0,533). It can be concluded that inappropriate parenting style worsened incident of sibling rivalry at preschool age children. Also, more democratic parenting style that applied, incident of sibling rivalry can be reduced. Based on the research results can be seen that the democratic parenting style is better applied to preschool children because it produced a low incidence of sibling rivalry.
