Description
Summary:Abstract Self-care deficit is one of problems commonly found in schizophrenic patients. The deficit occurs because the patients have cognitive disorder, resulting in their inabilities to take care of themselves, such as bathing, dressing, eating, and toileting. Supportive therapy is one of approach models to the patients with problems of self-care deficit, in which the patients provide support and contribution one another in solving the problems and able to improve their capabilities to gain optimum independence. The objective of this study was to analyze the influence of supportive therapy on the independence of schizophrenic patients who have self-care deficit. This study used quasi-experimental design. Sample size was 24 individuals, taken from Menur Mental Hospital, Flamboyant Room, by determining target population that met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The obtained respondents were divided into 2 groups, 12 receiving supportive treatment and 12 others did not receive such treatment and served as control. Data were analyzed using Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test and Mann Whitney Test with significance level of a < 0.05. The result of Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test before and after supportive therapy administration in treatment group had f1 = 0.002, and that of control group had p = 0.046. Whereas, the result of Mann Whitney Test on treatment group and control group after supportive therapy revealed p. = 0.001, indicating the presence of supportive therapy influence on the independence of schizophrenic patients with self-care deficit. Supportive therapy has significant influence on the independence of schizophrenic patients who have self-care deficit. Therefore, supportive therapy should be applied to patients with self-care problems as an effort to help the patients improving their independence in self-care.
