Description
Summary:Melasma is acquired by hypermelanosis that occurs especially on the face of a woman in reproductive age. It has possibly related to risk factors; genetic, ultra violet radiation, pregnancy and oral contraception. The oral contraceptive-blood copper mechanical interaction in melasma has not been clearly investigated yet. The purpose of this study is to see the relation between blood copper level and the use of oral contraception type for melasma patient. This study used cross-sectional design and was carried out from March to August 2011 in RSUP M. Hoesin Palembang. It took 44 oral contraception acceptor patients; 29 for combination pills and 15 mini pills based on inclusion and exclusion criteria. After assigned an informed consent, the patients were then medically examined and had 6 ml venous blood taken for spectrophotometric copper level determination in Regional Laboratory of Palembang. This study found out that the blood copper level of 44 patients was higher than normal (>200μg/100 ml blood). The mean of the blood copper level showed that there was a significant result for combination pill patient compared to mini pill. The significant differences were also found for; duration-chronic, nonmalar-pattern, non-light brown, overweight-obese, and nonepidermal-melasma. For descriptive result, it was more investigated in patients who were in the age-decade IV-V, race-Melayu, work-indoor, black symptom, lesion (malar pattern, macular, light brown, irregular, asymmetry), and epidermal melasma. Finally, the patient should be considered for blood copper level before using oral contraception and alternative mini pill to avoid the occurrence of melasma
