The comparison of sodium fluoride 0,05% and iodized salt 2% solution in reducing of Candida sp

Background: Acrylic denture base users were suggested to use mouthwash daily to reduce plaque formation. Sodium fluoride 0,05% and iodized salt 2% solution are two mouthwashes which can kill Candida sp., most common microorganism in acrylic denture users. This experiment was to know the difference...

Sodium fluoride 0,05% and iodized salt 2% solution are two mouthwashes which can kill Candida sp., most common microorganism in acrylic denture users. This experiment was to know the difference between these two mouthwashes in reducing Candida sp. collony. Purpose: To know if there’s a difference between Sodium fluoride 0,05% and iodized salt 2% solution in reducing numbers of Candida sp. collony on acrylic denture base users. Methods: 14 subjects divided in two groups were requested to gargle with 20ml Sodium fluoride 0,05% and iodized salt 2% solution for 30 seconds. 2ml of their saliva was taken before and after gargling, dilution 10-1, spread in Saboraud Dextrose Agar, incubation process in temperature 37ºC, 2x24 hours, then counting process. Result: There was a significant difference of Candida sp. collony’s decrease before and after gargling, which decreasing of Sodium fluoride 0,05% users was higher than iodized salt 2% users. Conclusion: There was a difference between Sodium fluoride 0,05% and iodized salt 2% solution in reducing numbers of Candida sp. collony which reducing effect of Sodium fluoride 0,05% is higher than iodized salt 2%. Key words: Sodium fluoride, iodized salt, Candida sp., mouthwash.
