Summary:IDENTIFICATION OF IMPURITIES AND DETERMINATION OF METANOL BEFORE AND AFTER FRACTIONAL DISTILLATION OF SPIRITUS BY GAS CHROMATOGRAPHY (GC-MS AND GC-FID) Enggar Dwi Puspitasari The objective of the present study was to identify the impurities content in spiritus, methanol of technical grade, pro analysis and HPLC grade. The impurity profile of spiritus is compared between before and after distillation by using GC-MS. The concentration of methanol in spiritus after distillation is determined by GC-FID and compared to methanol of technical grade, analytical and HPLC grade. The methanol after distillation is treated by adding Na2SO4 and Al2O3 to adsorb some of organic impurities. The results showed that the content of impurities in spiritus was in the decreasing order of spiritus, technical, analytical and HPLC-grade. After distillation the content of impurities in the spiritus decreased significantly, but the content of methanol increased significantly. It was concluded that fractional distillation was able to increase the methanol content in spiritus. Keywords: methanol, spiritus, fractional distillation, GC-MS, GC-FID
