Summary:The tetracycline was an antimicrobial broad spectrum.In addi t ion to the ant imi crobia1 effects. the tetracyc1 i ne has an anticollagenase effect and remove the smear layer of the root surface.The apical application of tetracycline in the subgingival area showed 100 times concentration higher than the systemic application.In a high concentration the tetracycline inhibit protein synthesis mamalia cell.hence the biocompatibility of tetracycline must be assesed. The aim of the study was to evaluate biocompatibility of tetracycline Hel gel in the concentration of 0.005% -10% and to compare the effectiveness on the removal of the smear layer.The experimental laboratoris were used in this study. Tetracycline Hel gel on the cocncentration of 0.005% -10% .cell lines BHK-21 and root surface were used in this study. The results showed that the biocompatibility had significant differences on the different tetracycline concentrations(p<0.05) .The tetracycline Hel gel < 0.7% was biocompatible to tissue culture. The resul ts of the removal of the smear layer test showed that the removal smear layer had significant different on the biocompatible of tetracycline Hel gel(p<O,05) .This presented that tetracycline Hel gel of 0,7% could remove the smear layer effectively.No significant difference could be observed on the removal of the smear layer between tetracycline Hel gel 0,7% and citric acid 30%.It's concluded that the biocompatible of tetracycline Hel ge1 0,7% can be e ffec t i ve on the remova 1 0 f the smear layer.
