Summary: | The word ‘Technology’ is not something strange anymore in our daily life
because nowadays everyone uses technology. This study aims at analyzing the
adjectival collocates of the noun ‘Technology’ by using corpus linguistics which
are Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA) and Corpus of Historical
American English (COHA). Considering that technology may develop from time
to time, the analysis is divided into four periods of time. The periods are 1940 –
1960, 1970 – 1990, 1991 – 2004 and 2005 – 2015. This analysis is also divided
into these genres: fiction, magazines, and newspaper. The adjectival collocates are
analyzed using the theory from Dixon (2005). The writer used mixed method
approach, which are quantitative and qualitative. The results of this study show
that the word in fiction genre that appears in all periods of time is ‘High’. In
magazine genre the words that appear in all periods are ‘New’, ‘Modern’,
‘Advanced’, and ‘Military’. In newspaper genre the words that appear are ‘New’
and ‘Modern’. For 1940 – 1960, there are the adjectives which are ‘Oldfashioned’
and ‘Superlative’ in fiction. For 1970 – 1990, there are the adjectives,
‘Accelerating’ and ‘Agricultural’ in magazine. For 1991 – 2004, there are the
adjectives, which are ‘Superior’ and ‘Sophisticated’ in fiction. For 2005 – 2015,
the adjective is ‘Clean’ for newspaper. This study shows that noun technology can
be applied in across genres and periods of time. |
