Summary: | Vertigo is an abnormality that originates from vestibular dysfunction
or from other organic damages that causes psychological conditions such as panic
attacks and depression. Up until now, there is scarce research that adapt a
questionnaire for the goal of finding the relation between personality and vertigo
(Gillain and Englebert, 2008). Therefore, this research was done with the goal of
finding the dominant type of personalities in vertigo patients.
Objective : To find out the dominant personality type in vertigo patients
Method : This research is classified as a observational descriptive research, with a
cross-sectional design. Sample was taken from vertigo-diagnosed patients of ENT
and Neurology Clinic of Dr. Soetomo General Hospital, from which a further
selection was done using inclusion and exclusion criteria. Patients who passed the
inclusion criteria was given an informed consent form and was then interviewed
using a NEO Personality Inventory Questionnaire to determine their personality
type based on the Big Five Personality Theory. After the questionnaire was filled,
the research proceeded to do data collection, grouping, and description based on sex
and age demography characteristics.
Result : From 38 patients, this research found that most of vertigo patients in both
of the clinics were female [n=31 (81,82%)], with the ratio of female and male
vertigo patient being 4,43:1. The largest age group was 51-60 years (42,1%), with
the mean age of the sample being 47,3 years (SD 13,24). Based on patient frequency, the dominant personality type in this group of vertigo patient is
Neuroticism and Conscientiousness with amount being 13 patients (34,21%). But,
from the mean total score of both group of personality types, the mean of
Conscientiousness was higher compared to Neuroticism. |
