Salmonella is a potential enteric pathogens and a major cause of bacterial foodborne diseases. Salmonella has been involved in a range of other illnesses, which includes typhoid or enteric fever (mainly Salmonella typhi and Salmonella paratyphi), endovascular infections, bactericemia, focal infections and enterocolitis (primarily Salmonella typhimurium, Salmonella enteritidis, and Salmonella heidelberg). Purpose: To identify the difference of Salmonella spp. contamination of raw chicken meat distributed in traditional and modern market in Surabaya Method: This study is a comparative study, which identifies the contamination of Salmonella spp. and other unidentified microbes using Total Plate Count. This study uses total sampling with samples of raw meat from traditional market and modern market in Surabaya. Results: There were 3 samples out of 16 samples from traditional market that are positive with Salmonella spp. contamination, and there were 3 samples out of 16 samples from modern market that are positive with Salmonella spp. contamination. From the study, it was found that no group is more superior that other in terms of Salmonella spp. contamination, knowing that both groups showed the same results of Salmonella spp. contamination with percentage of 15%. According to the results of Total Plate Count, 100% of samples from traditional market showed an uncountable value of microbes (>200 CFU), while 100% of samples from modern market showed countable value of microbes (<200 CFU). The mean Total Plate Count for samples in modern market presents 146 CFU (± 0.72). Conclusion: The research result concludes that there is no difference in Salmonella spp. contamination between traditional and modern market in Surabaya, however there is a major difference regarding the number of unidentified microbes between traditional and modern market in Surabaya. 2018-03-15 Thesis NonPeerReviewed text en http://repository.unair.ac.id/70779/1/abstrak.pdf text en http://repository.unair.ac.id/70779/2/full%20text.pdf Shania Priza Adelia, NIM011411133029 (2018) COMPARATIVE STUDY OF SALMONELLA CONTAMINATION IN RAW CHICKEN BETWEEN TRADITIONAL AND MODERN MARKET IN SURABAYA.
