COMPARING THE ADJECTIVE USED IN BEAUTY ARTICLES AT ELLE UK MAGAZINE AND THE BNC (BRITISH NATIONAL CORPUS)

A number of studies have shown that there are differences between males and females in the use of language, particularly in the use of adjectives. However, given the Feminism movement, there might be some changes in the use of vocabularies to be more similar. This study aims at finding out the use of adjectives in the articles of Elle UK magazines and compared them with the gender distribution in the BNC in order to find out the Feminism movement in past and present. The corpus size is 49,073 tokens, and they were processed using Antconc and CLAWS tagger. The theory used to classify the adjectives is based on Dixon (1991) on semantics categories. The result shows that were different in the adjective used in Elle UK and the BNC. Nevertheless, the differences are not significant. The data of total frequency shows that females use 118 adjectives, which is more than the males who only use 101 adjectives. For the semantic categories, with reference to the BNC, the males show higher frequencies in the semantic categories of dimension, age, value, difficulty, qualification and similarity. On the other hand, the females show higher semantic categories of physical property, colour and speed. As a result, females nowadays tend to use adjectives that most frequently used by males in the past. Therefore, it can be assumed that Feminism movement affects the language.
