Summary: | Global media in general follow the society’s traditional gender role which construct a figure of an ideal
man. In common music videos, an ideal man is portrayed as dominant, strong, and brave. This turns out
to underestimate gay for their masculinity, and they are most of the time considered as feminine. This
study aims at revealing how Gay Masculinity is constructed in Trilogy of Blue Neighbourhood by Troye
Sivan who did coming out video for being gay. The writer’s object includes three music videos; Wild,
Fools, and Talk Me Down released in 2015. The videos were chosen because they implied the process
of performing gay masculinity from the childhood until adulthood. In analyzing the data, the writer
used a qualitative method and Fiske’s Television Culture approach to better understand the
phenomenon. The data were collected by watching Troye Sivan’s Youtube channel several times to
select the scenes related to the issue. The scenes analyzed in this study must have some criteria; scenes
must engage with hegemonic masculinity, scenes must show a closure of sexuality, and scenes must show the participation of gay community. The findings reveal that gay masculinity is influenced by the heteronormativity applied in society. Gay masculinity represented in the videos includes the way a gay man behaves in manner and perform in physical appearance. In conclusion, sexual orientation has
nothing to do with gender identity. Gay can perform themselves as masculine as heterosexuals do.
Lastly, the study is expected to provide information on gender studies for the global education. |
