THE ASSOCIATION BETWEEN ADMINISTRATION OF ANTENATAL CORTICOSTEROID TO RESPIRATORY DISTRESS SYNDROME AS A PREVENTIVE DRUG IN PREMATURE INFANTS AT RSUD DR SOETOMO

Background: One of the most common problems of premature babies is hyaline membrane disease or usually called as respiratory distress syndrome (RDS). If compared to all the neonatal deaths mostly it is due to RDS. One of the most important antenatal therapies available to improve newborn outcomes...

Parturition Background: One of the most common problems of premature babies is hyaline membrane disease or usually called as respiratory distress syndrome (RDS). If compared to all the neonatal deaths mostly it is due to RDS. One of the most important antenatal therapies available to improve newborn outcomes is corticosteroid administration before preterm birth happens. Purpose: To determine the relationship between administration of antenatal corticosteroid to Respiratory Distress Syndrome (RDS) as a preventive drug in premature infants at RSUD dr. Soetomo. Method: This research is analytic observational with case control. The sample of this research will be all mothers who delivered and all preterm neonates who were born at the Instalasi Gawat Darurat and Ruang Merpati at RSUD dr Soetomo from January to March 2018. Results: There are 38 premature infants who developed respiratory distress syndrome (RDS). The most prevalent Apgar score at 5 minutes of age who developed RDS is fair (63.16%) respectively. Most of the infants who developed RDS were discharged and healed (60.53%). There is a correlation between classification according to the gestational age of delivery and birth weight of infant with RDS. However, there is no correlation between mother with gestational diabetes, the gender of the premature infants and administration of antenatal corticosteroid with RDS. Conclusion: The administration of Dexamethasone may not decrease the incidence of RDS at RSUD dr. Soetomo from January until March 2018, however, this is probably because of the small sample size and lack of other significant known confounders.
