usually experience double consciousness which is depicted in Starr Carter, the main character of the novel The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. This study attempts to examine the portrayal of double consciousness experienced by Starr Carter in her living, Garden Heights, and her school, Williamson Prep and the effect of double consciousness to her in taking appropriate action in any occasion. This study uses qualitative descriptive method in exploring the problems and applies double consciousness and the veil theory by W.E.B Du Bois to reveal about the experience of
Starr Carter who is trapped between two cultures. In this study, Starr Carter manages her double consciousness through some efforts, such as pretend to act normal, avoid
slang words, and keep secret about her best friend Khalil’s death incident. It also shows that Starr Carter experiences double consciousness not only because of the racism she
got from her environment, but also the way her parents taught to her. This study concludes that the impact of double consciousness not only make Starr Carter experiences identity crisis, but also gives her power to speak out about justice. |
