Summary:Primary immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is an acquired immune mediated disorder characterized by isolated thrombocytopenia, defined as a peripheral blood platelet count less than 150 x 109/L, and the absence of any underiying cause. In Europe, adult ITP has an incidence of 1.6 to 3.9 cases per 100.000 per year with increasing incidence with older age and equal for the sexes except in the mid-adult years (30-60 years), when the disease is more prevalent in women.
