Expansion activities of the city to the outskirts of Magelang city is increasing time to time. Such expansions are in the form of liniear pattern and leap frog pattern, both occupy farm land around the outskirts of town. This study aims to determine the characteristics of the expansion and factors that influence it. It used qualitative descriptive methods and interviews with respondents related to the expansion of urban activities. The results showed that the expansion of long-running activities with different speeds in each direction of the suburbs. Some of the factors that cause the expansion of urban activities included = the need for a broader land, land values, characteristics of good land, high accessibility, highways, utilities available, environmental comfort and safety. The impacts of such expansion are in the form of loss of agricultural land, shift of the livelihoods of the population. Some positive impacts are the growing of local economy, increase local tax revenues, unemployment decrease and better accessibility.
