Description
Summary:Ginger beverage and traditional herbal medicine industry spread all over Indonesia. These industries produce waste of emprit ginger that has not been fully utilized. Waste of emprit ginger is usually dumped or drained to be burned. The objective of this study is to utilize waste of emprit ginger (Zingiber officinale) for raw material of essential oils. This study uses three methods of distillation, namely water distillation, water-steam distillation and steam distillation. The raw materials used are wet and dry waste of emprit ginger. Distillation carried out for 6 hours for each method. The results showed that waste of emprit ginger can be used as raw material for essential oils. The best method is water distillation with wet waste of emprit ginger. This method produces yield 0.29% and the physical and chemical properties according to SNI 06-1312-1998. The resulting essential oils have the following properties, color : clear yellow, specific gravity : 0.879, refractive index : 1,483, optical rotation : (-31o) and zingiberene content : 16.73%. Economically, distillation of waste of emprit ginger is feasible to develop.
