Activist students were almost always associated with low academic achievement and late graduation, or even dropout. High academic achievement and graduation on time, for the most students�maybe also for educators and educationists�were two main standards of academic success in higher education, but for activist students, the meaning of achievement was not just about a higher grade or sooner graduation. The participants in this study were seemingly more focused on developing competences than obtaining performances, more interested in attaining non-academic achievement than academic achievement, and had a broader area of interest than just academic activities. Several participants exactly prefer to delay the graduation until two-four semesters for the sake of sustaining the leadership position in the student organization, or preparing something they need to face the future, so that they prefer to graduate �on the right time� than �on time�. This qualitative research with the interpretative phenomenological analysis method aimed to understand and describe the psychological dynamics of academic achievement motivation among activist students. The participants were seven activists of student organizations from a public university in Yogyakarta. This research revealed the meaning of academic achievement, the meaning of study in higher education, and the meaning of extra-curricular activities for activist students as well as how the meanings affect their academic achievement motivation. Some recommendations may be useful for decision makers and administrators in the student affairs, and some findings are interesting to be explored farther.
