Summary: | thesis This discusses Amiri Barakas role in African Americans struggle
for establishing African Americans existence through his protest poems.
Focusing on Barakas A Poem Some People Will Have To Understand,
Afrikan Revolution Black People, Three Modes of History and Culture, and
Babylon Revisited, which are considered representative in accordance with the
study, this thesis tries to elaborate how Baraka expresses his anger to fight against
the whites discrimination and domination. Baraka stresses on the struggle against
the discrimination and domination in the sector of education, employment,
economy and whites brutality against the African Americans. The research is
conducted in a perspective of American Studies. Therefore, it applies an
interdisciplinary theory in order to get a deeper understanding about the American
culture and society in the specific period discussed. In addition, the research uses
historical, sociological, and cultural approaches along with a literary approach.
Since all the data used in this research are written texts, library research is
applied. Books, journals, and many written materials, including internet-based
materials, are treated as secondary data, while the poems are considered the
primary data. There are three steps in this library research, namely collecting data,
selecting data and analyzing data. The other method used in this research is a
descriptive method, by which all the data obtained are analyzed and presented
descriptively.
The research shows that miserable life experienced by the African
Americans, as the result of the discriminatory treats done by white Americans,
encourages Amiri Baraka to start thinking to protest through his poems. Baraka
begins to protest the circumstances such as the condition of the African
Americans that live in poverty with no progress in education and employment
sectors. This makes the African Americans lose their power to determine their
own life. Baraka contributes a new nuance of writing in African American
literature by composing such provocative poems as discussed in this research. |
