Summary: | This thesis is a study of the effect on policy conversion to gas fuel in cooking
culture among poor families at Klipoh Village in Borobudur, Central Java. It emphasizes
the relation between gender and the level of technological acceptance.
The study showed that there is an ambivalent in womens domestic tasks among the
poor families at Klipoh village as a consequence of technological changes in cooking
equipment. Socio historically, women in a village that is structurally poor, are considered
stronger than men as they take multi task responsibilities, from household chores to
earnings. Despite the all-round ability, these strong women are still submissive to men as
the head of their household. Since the policy of energy conversion in cooking culture, the
women especially those with minimal exposure to education, began to rely on their men in
handling their new cooking equipment. Although the new stove offers its practicality but
the use of gas tank and its regulator seemed to be its main challenge. This is the reason
behind a notion that technology is a masculine domination.
As a result of the low acceptance in technological change among women, a
negotiating condition emerged. Luweng as the more familiar cooking equipment was still
being used to prepare daily meals, while gas stove was more utilized by those who have
food businesses. This condition supports the theory of habitus such as cooking, couldnt
suddenly be changed by imposing a new modern technology. |
