Description
Summary:This study aims to test a theoretical model formed, i.e., whether symbolic playing is influenced by age, gender, and socio-economic background of the childrens parents (parental income) and the ability to understand mental state of the self and others mental state. Furthermore it is to test whether the age have influence on theory of mind (ToM). The subjects of this study were 51 children consisting of boys and girls aged 36- 84 months with a various backgrounds of socio-economic status. The data collection was observation of the playing process through a running record conducted by 4 raters. Reliability and Inter-rater reliability coefficients were 0.913. The Symbolic and imaginary play used were tools which had been test by 7 professional judgments, i.e., kindergarten teachers and preschool teachers. Content Validity Index (CVI) of observation instruments of symbolic and imaginary play was 0.351 and CVI of theory of mind instrument was 0.323. Data on age, gender and socioeconomic status were obtained through the identity data of the children. The data analysis was performed using variance-based SEM method, i.e., Partial Least Square (PLS). The evaluation of overall model showed that all the variables or constructs had appropriateness between constructed model and empirical model. ToM and age significantly influenced the symbolic and imaginary play. Whereas gender and parental income had no significant effect to the symbolic and imaginary play. ToM and age had no significant relationship. The ToMs influence degree to the symbolic and imaginary play was in the high category, whereas the influence of age to the symbolic and imaginary play was in the medium category.
