Description
Summary:The aim of this thesis is for seeing naming practice phenomenon at Salman Muslim community. Issues about name relate with identities issue. It stresses at identity as Muslim at Sundanese who are Salman members connected with Islamic kaffah concept. So, that naming patterns at this community become unique. This research becomes important as study of contemporary Islam at Sunda. This thesis used Qualitative method. I did participant observation as tool for getting whole description about Salman activities from December 2011 until March 2012. Interviewed ten families who active at Salman community for knowing how they understand naming practice, influential background, and background of choosing name for their children and what kind of identity from which that naming practice constructed. From this research I found some patterns of naming practice at Salman community, such as: Arabic pattern, combining between Arabic names and other name patterns. And the last is local or Sundanese pattern. Generally, naming practices at this community are using Arabic pattern, because even though parents choose other name they still put Arabic names to their children names. Variations of naming pattern at Salman community show us that understandings of Islamic kaffah concept at Revivalist community in Indonesia are not monolithic. Constructed of identity from this naming practice is identity as kaffah Muslim. This idea cause parent leave traditional ritual at naming practice and this is the implementation of amar maruf nahi munkar concept. Uniqueness of naming practice at Salman could not be seen literally but from meaning and goal of that naming practice.
