Divinity in Therav�da Buddhism is an interesting matter to discuss, because Therav�da Buddhism has a different concept from others about Divinity. Therefore, this research studies on the text point of view of Therav�da Buddhism and Buddhist understanding toward Divinity. This qualitative research is focused on the texts of Therav�da Buddhism and Buddhist responses to Divinity. I explore the texts of Therav�da Buddhism to know responses formative Buddhism toward Divinity. Field research was conducted in Purwodadi village. I conducted participant observation and in-depth interview to collect data to the Buddhist response to the concept of Divinity. Geertz�s theory of Moods and motivation serve as the reference in analyzing the data to determine the Buddhist cognitive response to Divinity. The conclusion of this research is as follow. Nibb�na is the concept of Divinity in Therav�da Buddhism. Therav�da Buddhism has no concept of �Personal God� and does not view God as anthropomorphism and anthropopathism. In the paradigm of Buddhist text, Buddhism views Divinity as the �Ultimate Reality or the Absolute�. Rituals only have a little room in Therav�da Buddhism. Nevertheless, Buddhists in Purwodadi have responses and new understanding toward Divinity. Buddhists understand rituals as a part of their effort to attain Nibb�na and tolerant in accepting local culture (Java). Buddhists still maintain tradition and Javanese culture, because there are many Buddhist values remains in these traditions.
