Secondly, it aims to describe those backgrounds of phatic communion forms, types, and distributions. Thirdly, it aims to describe function of phatic communion usage in the trade interaction in traditional market. The data of this study are obtained from nonparticipation observation method by listen to conversations in the trade interaction that occur in Kertek traditional markets. This method completed by record method by recording the conversation that occurred using tape recorder. Analysis processes in this study are based on a sociolinguistic approach as triggered by Hymes (1974) by associating the data with social context. From the observation and analysis has been done, there are four important results from phatic communion by participants in Kertek traditional markets. The first, each form, type, and distribution of the phatic communion shows uniqueness compared to those found in the other social community. The second, there are new results related to previous studies, that small talk are not only present at the opening and closing sequence as stated by Laver (1974, 1975, 1981) in his study, but also at insertion sequences. The third, as part of language use in society, phatic communion related to a number of social factors as its context of use. The fourth, although it is arbiter and it does not contain new information, phatic communion is still important in relation to its interactional and social function in the society.
