Summary: | The main aim of regional policy is to reduce regional disparities. There is
no doubt that action to tackle regional disparities in Sumatera Island is needed.
However, the regional policy that was applied so far often the same for every
region (white policy). Additionally, budget constraints forced the government to
make priorities so that the results are more effective and right on target. Therefore
we need to make a more appropriate definition of region as a subject of regional
policy. Regional policy should not just considering economic problems but also
social ones, so that we can obtain development priorities in each region to reduce
regional disparities.
The classification will be obtained through use of multivariate statistical
methods, and it is based on a wide number of demographic, economic, educations,
and employment indicators. This method contain factor and cluster analysis with
the addition of spatial autocorellation analysis (Morans I and G-statistic) applied
to data with district level in Sumatera Island from 2007-2010.
This study shows that: (1) social disparities in Sumatera Island are bigger
than the economic disparities |
