Description
Summary:Large potency of nipa in Indonesia can be used as raw material for binderless particleboards. This raw material contains large amount of cellulose, especially on its frond. The binderless particleboard usually has low dimensional stability. The addition of organic activator to enhance the dimensional stability is important point. Citric acid has been researched as cross linking agent to improve physical and mechanical properties. This study aimed to determine effect of particleboard material from nypa frond with citric acid addition on particleboard properties. This research used a completely randomized design with two factors, i.e. nipa frond particle (outer part, iner part and mixture of iner and outer frond 50: 50) and citric acid content (0% and 10%). Those material was pressed on a temperature 180oC for 15 minutes. Outer side material was obtained from nipa frond with a distance of 0.5 cm. The evaluation according to JIS A 5908 consisted of physichal properties (moisture content, density, water absorption and thickness swelling) and mechanichal properties (internal bond strength, modulus of rupture and modulus of elasticity). Interaction of raw materials and amount of citric acid significantly affected to moisture content of particleboard. Material factor was significantly affected to moisture content and internal bond strength of particleboard. Citric acid content was highly affected to moisture content, density and water absorption. The best properties was obtained from particleboard made with outer part of nypa frond and 10% addition of citric acid. Those board has 0,769 g/cm3 density, 6,24% moisture content, 58,04% water absorption, 2,90% thickness swealling, 2,79 kgf/cm2 internal bond strength, 7014 kgf/cm2 modulus of elasticity and 27,15 kgf/cm2 modulus of rupture.
