Summary:Conditions of increasing competition forced companies in the pump industry to re-evaluate the strategies and processes that have been made in producing components or products. The evaluation was conducted in order to improve the competitiveness of the firm. In producing a product, companies need a lot of inputs such as raw materials and other components. There are two options that can be taken by the company to obtain the input, make itself or buy it from outside sources. This study discusses the make or buy decision on the manufacture of centrifugal pump package system in PT. Bumi Cahaya Unggul. The purpose of this study was to determine the contribution of sourcing strategies toward the competitiveness and performance of the firm. To determine it, the researchers used several analyzes were conducted, including an analysis of the external environment, including PEST analysis and Porter's Five Forces, and the analysis of the company�s internal environment. To determine the effectiveness of the strategy option that have been taken, benchmarking analysis was done. Analysis of strategic group map was done to map the position of the companies in the pump industry for several strategic characteristics. From the analysis, it is known that sourcing strategies can contribute to the firm competitiveness and can impact on company performance. In particular, �make� decision will contribute to the cost leadership, and �buy� decision will contribute to the differentiation leadership. Companies with a �make� strategy will tend to have lower prices and faster delivery times. That is because companies can take advantage of all capacity owned to make cost savings. Meanwhile, the company that is more prevalent to use �buy� strategy will have advantages in terms of quality of the products and production flexibility.
