Description
Summary:Bedono Village is located in Sayung Sub District, Demak District, Central Java Province. This area is really prone to tidal flood due to the severe level of abrasion. Mangrove planting is one of the coastal protection programs that have been done massively in this village. Moreover, the use of social capital as a good potential capital in Bedono Village is necessary to support the coastal protection program. The objectives of this research are : (1) to identify the existing condition of natural resources potential (mangrove) for coastal protection (2)to assess the local people perception of their contribution to the coastal protection and (3)to measure the value of community action as a social capital in the Demak coastal area as a potential to protect the Demak coastal area. The research is conducted by using quantitative and qualitative method. The quantitative research is done by questionnaire interview to local people with the number of respondent of 75 people. Whereas, the qualitative method is done by in depth interview and focus group discussion (FGD) to the informants from Mangrove group, NGOs, and governmental bodies. The result shows that the existing condition of Mangrove is good and brings benefits to the local people by the economical value of its product. The perception of the local people regarding to their own contribution in the coastal protection program is neutral, but tend to be negative due to the lack of participation in the planning and implementation of the program. The bonding social capital of local people is weak and still need to be improved. The bonding and bridging social capital of Mangrove group is weak due to the fragmentation among mangrove groups in the village. Whereas the linking social capital within NGO and governmental bodies is rather good although it is necessary to have an improvement regarding to the way of communication and program planning among NGO and governmental bodies.
