The purpose of this research is to discribe the communication patterns used by the members of Nahdlatul Ulama of Madurese ethnic (WNUEM), and to explain the faktors which determine the communication patterns used by WNUEM. The communication patterns in this research focus on the use of speech levels (ondhâghân bhâsa), the language choice and the language variety used to do code-switching and code-mixing, the intonation (tone), and the symbols appearing through the gestures (body language) which help to understand the speech acts in verbal language, and turn-taking. The speech category and function as the part of the communication patterns are discussed in a separate subchapter. It is hoped that this research gives two positive contributions, namely: the theoretical and practical ones. Theoretically, the research result is useful to contribute the development of linguistics, especially in the field of sociolinguistics, pragmatics, and ethnography of communication. Practically, it is hoped that the research can motivate other researchers in the similar fields. The research result is also hoped to be the references for the Nahdlatul Ulama organizations and other organizations in developing activities involving their members to use language as a medium of communication The qualitative method with the ethnography of communication approach is used to achieve the goal of this research. The data were collected by doing participation and nonparticipation observation, interviewing, documenting, and tape recording. The recorded (spoken) data were transcribed into the written text. Having been collected, the data were analyzed descriptively by the method of the ethnography of communication using the speech analysis components, conversation analysis, discourse analysis with the concept of pragmatics and explanation. The research result shows that the communication patterns of WNUEM can be classified in to the following patterns: (1)The communication patterns between kiai and kiai (Islamic religious leaders), (2) The communication patterns between kiai and UNUEM
