THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN LOCAL AND COMMERCIAL HYDROXYAPATITE ON MICROSTRUCTURE AND TRANSVERSE STRENGTH

Hydroxyapatite (HA) is the mostly dominant mineral in teeth and bone. Hydroxyapatite material is biocompatible, osteoconductive, bioactive and has similar properties to those of bone and teeth. Hydroxyapatite could be synthesized from calcite and diammonium hydrogen phosphate. Hydroxyapatite is brit...

Hydroxyapatite material is biocompatible, osteoconductive, bioactive and has similar properties to those of bone and teeth. Hydroxyapatite could be synthesized from calcite and diammonium hydrogen phosphate. Hydroxyapatite is brittle and low fracture toughness. The aim of research was to evaluate the difference between the commercial and local calcite hydroxyapatite on microstructure and transverse strength. This study used local calcite (PT Omya, Surabaya, Jawa Tinmur) which was synthesized into HA and commercial HA (HA-200, Tai Hei Co. Ltd., Tokyo, Jepang). Sintering were carried out on samples of HA compacted at a pressure of 120 MPa, at 12500C for 2 h. XRD (x-ray diffraction), FTIR (fourier transform infrared) and SEM (scanning electron microscopy) were used to characterize of HA. Measurement of transverse strength of HA was determined with universal testing machine (MPa). The result of this study showed that the local calcite different from commercial HA on microstructure and transverse strength. The results showed that microstructure of local HA showed greater pores and lesser dense than commercial HA. The results of T-test showed there was significant relation between local HA and commercial HA on transverse strength (p < 0.05). The transverse strength of local HA was lower than commercial HA. It can be concluded that local HA was different from commercial HA on microstructure and transverse strength.
