Hery Wijayanto, MP. ETD Sumatran Elephant (Elephas maximus sumatranus) is a species distributed in Sumatera Indonesia with Critically Endangered conservation status according to International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources. In nature, direct and safe contact with elephant is a challenge. Safer and simpler alternative option to study the population and social composition of elephant herd is urgently needed. One of the alternative is using their foot prints left in their habitat. For that reason, the aim of this research is to identify the correlation between hind limb footpad circumferences and body size (body length, shoulder height, chest girth, pelvis width, and distance between angulus scapula tuber coxae of Sumatran elephant). This research was involving 28 adult Sumatran elephants, consisting of 5 adult males and 23 adult females, and also 6 Sumatran elephants under 20 years old consisting of 2 males and 4 females. The data were collected from Kebun Binatang Gembira Loka Yogyakarta, Taman Safari Indonesia 2 Prigen, and Taman Wisata Candi Borobudur Magelang. Measurement of body size variables and hind footpad circumference is done using modified calipers and measuring tape. The measurements then were statistically analyzed using correlation and regression. The results shows that both adult and under 20 years old Sumatran elephants hind footpad circumference is correlated with their body length, shoulder height, chest girth, pelvis width, and distance between angulus scapula and tuber coxae. The linear regression of adult Sumatran elephants hind footpad circumference with body length is y = 1,347x + 127,7, shoulder height is y = 0,767x + 130,4, chest girth is y = 0,700x + 239,9, pelvis width is y = 0,344x + 78,34, and distance between angulus scapula and tuber coxae is y = 0,261x + 80,59. For under 20 years old Sumatran elephant, the linear regression with body length is y = 3,920x - 152,6, shoulder height is y = 2,380x - 46,48, chest girth is y = 2,278x + 57,52, pelvis width is y = 1,556x - 51,28, and distance between angulus scapula tuber coxae is y = 1,369x - 38,15.
