Description
Summary:In The Shadow of Modernity: Indo People in Magelang Town, 1906- 1942 is pointed to be my title thesis. It analyzes the existence of Indo people in Magelang town. It would also attempt to leak their lifestyle habit at the town surrounding during colonial time. This round-about explanations embrace and strengthen by kind sources of reading magazines, newspapers, colonial report as well as observing contemporarily photo album between 20th century to 1942. The prevailing Decentralization Law in 1903 brought about town changing status spread out several big towns in Java to gain the so-called gemeente. Magelang got the status three years later. Since then, autonomical government did some dazzling make-ups to build such modern symbols due to many tourists whispered by several tourism attractions in Magelang. Hotels, movie theaters, department stores, costumiéres stood out to fulfil lifestyle necessity of growing people coming in and out. In this sense, the town culture identified as closed as modern culture. It led to change Indo people lifestyle who were especially proud of tempo doeloe of typically Indische culture before 20th century. The existence of European totok or the European full-bloods in Magelang showed a leading role for Indo family in particular. Indisch culture becoming faded as merely shadow in 20th century.
