The advantages of CPC in comparison to other bone grafts are adaptability to bone defect, in vivo hardening, and biocompatibility. The disadvantage of CPC is its low mechanical strength. The setting and hardening of CPC are caused by the entanglement of precipitated apatite crystals. Solutions containing phosphate ion are usually used to accelerate setting reaction. The aim of this study was to investigate the difference of compressive strength of alpha tricalcium phosphate (α-TCP) using disodium hydrogen phosphate (Na2HPO4) and sodium dihydrogen phosphate (NaH2PO4) solution. Twelve samples of α-TCP cement were prepared in 3 mm diameter and 6 mm height. Samples were divided into two groups, the first α-TCP powder were mixed with Na2HPO4 solution and the second α-TCP powder were mixed with NaH2PO4 solution. Samples were soaked in saline solution for 24 hours at 37°C. After soaking, the samples were tested using universal testing machine (UTM). The data were calculated using compressive strength formulation. The result was evaluated statistically using independent sample t-test with significancy level 95%. The mean of compressive strength of α-TCP cement using Na2HPO4 and NaH2PO4 solution were 44.51±4.22 MPa and 21.52±1.85 MPa. Statistical analysis showed significant difference between two solutions (p<0.05). It can be concluded that there is a significant difference of compressive strength between α-TCP using Na2HPO4 and NaH2PO4 solution. The α-TCP cement using Na2HPO4 solution has greater compressive strength than α-TCP cement using NaH2PO4 solution.
