ETD Indonesia ratified the 1982 Law of the Sea Convention (LOSC) in 1985. Pursuant to the LOSC, an archipelagic State like Indonesia is entitled to archipelagic waters and internal waters as well as other maritime zones of jurisdiction. In the case of Archipelagic States, internal waters are the one within closing lines, which an archipelagic State may define based on article 50 of the LOSC. The closing line between internal waters and archipelagic waters in the research limited to bay closing lines. Should an archipelagic State not define its internal waters, the entire waters enclosed by its archipelagic baselines are considered as archipelagic waters. It is worth noting that archipelagic waters and internal waters provide different set of rights and obligation to foreign vessels in term of navigation. It is important for Indonesia to define its internal waters, and distinguish it from archipelagic waters, by designating closing lines, which Indonesia has yet to do. The research aims to identify internal waters inside bay closing line in Sunda strait and define each internal waters geographically. The research focused on the Sunda strait, which the method used is determination of internal waters based on bay closing lines. A bay can be defined as internal waters if the closing line of its natural entrance points does not exceed 24 nautical miles. Furthermore, its area must be as large as, or larger than the semicircle whose diameter is a closing line drawn across the natural entrance points. The method used in this study in accordance with the determination of the bay closing lines according to the UNCLOS and the ratio of the length calculations. Based on the research, there are five bays in Sunda Strait that pursuant to LOSC. The bays are Semangka, Lampung, Miskam, Paraja, and Sarimo. Five bays that identified, defined geographically each internal waters to registered and published by the United Nations.
