HUBUNGAN PANJANG FEMUR DENGAN UKURAN TUBUH GAJAH SUMATRA (Elephas maximus sumatranus)

Indonesia is one of the greatest diversity country of mammals (701 species of mammals listed) in the world, one of these mammals is Asian Elephant. As one of the natural habitat of the modern elephant and mainland for ancient elephants migration (Stegodonyen and Elefanten) as well, Indonesia also...

As one of the natural habitat of the modern elephant and mainland for ancient elephants migration (Stegodonyen and Elefanten) as well, Indonesia also content abundant of elephant ancestor fossils found in some places of Indonesia, such as Bandung, Sangiran, Trinil and Blora. Most of the fossil found is femur bone as the largest and the strongest long bone of elephant. The research was done to find out the relationship between the femur length and the body size of adult Sumatraan Elephant. The outcome of this research will be very useful to reconstruct the ancestors elephant body based on the fossil of the femur bone. The research was carried out by measuring 28 adult Sumatraan elephantsdirectly(including the length of femur, body length, height of the shoulder, chest girth, width of pelvic, and the distance between angulus scapula caudalis and tuber coxae), usingmeasuring tape and modified compass. It was assumed that the modern elephant have the same body proporsion with their ancestor. The length of femur bone collected then was analysed statistically using correlation and regression to find the corelation with the body length, shoulder height, chest girth, width of pelvic, and the distance between angulus scapula caudalis and tuber coxae. The results show that the length of the femur bone have correlation with other elephant body as follow 1) strong correlation between femur length vs body length with linear regresion y = 2,451x + 62,02, vs body height withy = 1,798x + 56,92 and vs pelvic width withy = 0,735x + 51,7 [Yogyakarta] : Universitas Gadjah Mada 2013 Thesis NonPeerReviewed , Y.E.
