Summary:Binahong leaves (Anredera cordifolia (Ten.) Steenis) contain several potential compounds that can help speed up the healing process of wounds, such as vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E, and flavonoids. Vitamin A and flavonoids has function as anti-inflammatory and antioxidant, vitamin C plays important role in the synthesis of collagen, while vitamin E has been widely recognized as an antioxidant. The aim of this study is to determine the effect of binahong leaves (A. cordifolia) extract on collagen density in the gingival wound healing process of Sprague Dawley rats. The study subjects consisted of 45 male white rats (Rattus norvegicus) Sprague Dawley strain 3 months old and injured with 2,5 mm diameter punch biopsy at the labial side of gingiva then covered with periodontal pack. The subjects were divided into 5 groups, namely the positive control group (using a 10% povidone iodine), binahong ethanol extract group treatment (10%, 20%, and 40%) and negative control group. Three rats in each group were decapitated on days 3, 7, and 14. Histological preparations of scar tissue colored with Mallory Trichrome staining to assess the collagen density as wound healing parameters. Data obtained were tested using Kruskall Wallis test and Mann-Whitney test. Ther is no significant difference between treatment groups 10%, 20%, and 40% ethanol extract compared with negative control and povidone iodine as positive control (p> 0,05). The conclusion is binahong leaf extract had no significant effect on collagen density on gingival wound healing.
