Byproducts such as tar and particulates can also be produced in this gasification process. The byproduct can be a problem for gasification process because it can reduce the quality of the syngas. Tar and particulates have to be separated from the syngas components as well as the cooling gas to condense the water vapor carried in the syngas is needed to improve the quality of gas production. One of the alternatives for the purpose is utilizing spiral pipe condenser to separate tar and particulates and also the cooling gas. This study was conducted to analyze the performance of the cooling and cleaning of the syngas by using spiral pipe condensation. The study was conducted by giving cooling water discharge treatment with discharge variations (0, 0.07, and 0.2 L / sec), and a spiral pipe treatment with diameter variation (0.75, 1, and 1.25 inches). Performance parameters measured were changes in temperature and mass of tar that can be separated with a spiral condenser pipe. To determine the effect of the treatment given to the measured parameter, there were used 2 factor of factorial experiment using analysis of variance (ANOVA). The results showed that variations in pipe diameter spiral significantly affected syngas cooling process, the larger diameter spiral pipe, the greater the temperature of syngas drops. Cooling water discharge variations did not affect the decrease in temperature syngas. Variations diameter spiral pipe and discharge of cooling water significantly affected syngas cleaning process of tar and particulates. For treatment interaction of diameter spiral pipe with cooling water discharge did not significantly affect the cooling process and syngas cleaning. The greatest temperature reduction was achieved in variation of 1.25 inch diameter pipe with cooling water flow of 0.07 L / sec was equal to 33.9 oC. The greatest variation of the cleaning tar and particulate was achieved at 1.25-inch diameter pipe with cooling water flow 0.2 L / sec which was equal to 256.7 grams.
