Sutijan, M.T., Ph.D. ETD Acrolein is an intermediate product to produce other products, such as acrylic acid, methionine, methinine hidroxy, guraldehyde and synthetic amino. The needs of acrolein and acrylic acid have been fulfilled by importing from other countries. Development of acrolein in Indonesia is hoped to bring profits and increase national economic. The plant is planned to operate for 330 days/year with acrolein production capacity of 30.000 tons/year. The main raw material required is as much as 34.062,8 tons/year. The main method process used in producing acrolein are propylene oxidation with oxygen. In general, acrolein manufacturing stages process are as follows : (i) propylene oxidation with oxygen in fixed bed multitube reactor with bymuth molybdate as catalyst. (ii) absorption of acrolein and acetaldehyde from residual gas reaction using water as a solution, (iii) separatioin of acetaldehyde from acrolein and water in distillation column � 01, (iv) separation of 99% acrolein from water as a product in distillation column � 02. As a support, utility plant unit supplies 274.815 kg/hour of water, 8.778 kW electricity, compressed air up to 23,75 m3/hour, and 17.114 kg/hour of steam. The plant will be established in the city of Cilegon, Banten province, with consideration of raw material oriented. Cilegon region is near PT Chandra Asri as a propylene producer. Economic evaluation calculation results the requirement of fixed capital investment is up to $ 55,522,234 + Rp117.528.524.600 and working capital is up to $1,628,424 + Rp260.456.919.800. At 100% production, has been obtaned values of ROI before tax is at 29,28% and ROI after tax is at 17,57%. POT before tax is 2,58 years, and POT after tax is 3,69 years. BEP at 40,51 %, SDP at 17,09 % and DCFRR at 23,85%. Based on economic evaluation results, plant of acrolein with producation capacity of 30.000 tons/year are worth it to be studied further.
