Description
Summary:Leaf litter of teak accumulation on forest floor can be used to improve soil fertility in forest management. The aims of this study were (i) to investigate the increasing rate of teak leaf litter decomposition in teak stands aged 46, 25 and 19 years and bioactivator (EM-4) application, (ii) to know the factors controlling litter decomposition (such as microclimate, weight biomass of decomposer and litter quality) and (iii) to estimate nutrient release (C, N, P, K) of teak leaf litter. The study was conducted in Wanagama I Educational Forest from January to April 2013 in rainy season. The litterbag method was used to evaluate decomposition. Materials of this study were 40 g of teak leaf litter from those three ages which applied with bioactivator (5 ml EM-4 + 5 g sugar + 10 g soft rice skin + 100 ml water). Total samples were 192 litterbags. Results indicated that teak leaf litter which put on the older teak stand (46 years) showed higher decomposition index value (k = 0.042) than 25 years (k = 0.027) and 19 years old (k = 0.021). EM-4 application in decomposition of teak leaf litter was significantly affected for increasing decomposition index value (k = 0.035) than without EM-4 application (k = 0.029). Decomposition time of teak leaf litter in teak stand aged 46, 25, 19 years with EM-4 application were faster than without EM-4 application. The older teak stand has higher soil humidity, lower soil temperature, lower light intensity, and higher weight biomass of decomposer (especially soil fauna) than the younger teak stands, therefore it has higher the k value. The rate of teak leaf litter decomposition was considered fast, because the content of cellulose (31.58%) was higher than lignin (15.42%). Teak leaf litter contained C of 48.74%, N of 0.93%, P of 0.08% and K of 0.17%. During decomposition process, remaining nutrients content of teak leaf litter in the older teak stand were lower than the younger teak stands, so it showed higher nutrients release. EM-4 application in decomposition of teak leaf litter can increase the release of nutrients (C, N, P, K). Therefore, it accelerates the nutrients return to soil.
