Kristiana Etnawati, MPH, Sp.KK (K) ETD Background: Acne vulgaris is the most common skin disease that occurs in adolescence. Commonly, the pathogenesis of acne vulgaris is caused by free radicals belonging to the reactive oxygen species (ROS). ROS is needed to maintain the physiological function of the body, but when it excesses in quantity, oxidative stress happens leading to an inflammatory response that manifests differently in each individual. Oxidative stress is neutralized by antioxidant, including vitamin C or ascorbic acid. Administration of vitamin C and its derivatives, either through oral or topical has been shown to reduce level of oxidative stress in the body. Serum level of vitamin C in higher in people who do not suffer from acne vulgaris compared with patients with acne vulgaris has been proven true. However, serum level of vitamin C in various degrees of severity in patients with acne vulgaris has not been performed. Objective: To find the correlation between serum level of vitamin C in various degrees of severity of acne vulgaris. Method: This study used cross-sectional involving 51 respondents with acne vulgaris with various degrees of severity entry criteria for inclusion. We used DNPH principle to measure serum levels of vitamin C. The result is analyzed with Pearson correlation analysis test methods. Result: The value of correlation is -0,405 (r = -0,405) between serum levels of vitamin C and degrees of severity of acne vulgaris. This study is also statistically significant (p = 0,003, p < 0,05). Conclusion: There is a correlation between serum levels of vitamin C and degrees of severity of acne vulgaris. The strength of correlation is moderate and negative correlation direction means if the value of serum levels of vitamin C is greater, so the degree of severity of acne vulgaris would be milder and vice versa.
