Description
Summary:Background: Patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) are risk of complications in microvascular and macrovascular system. The complications associated with the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA) and Advanced Glycation End Product (AGE). One of the herbs that are used for the treatment of diseases is the pomegranate that has a high antioxidant capacity. Objective: To determine the effects of pomegranate juice (Punica granatum) on serum level of MDA and AGE in streptozotocin-induced rats (Rattus norvegicus). Methods: The subjects consisted of 20 male rats (Rattus norvegicus) age ± 6-8 weeks and weight 200 g. Induction of diabetes is using streptozotocin 50 mg/kg. Subjects were divided into 4 groups. Group I: glibenclamide 0.1 mg/200gBW (control), group II: 1 ml/200gBW pomegranate juice, group III: 2 ml/200gBW pomegranate juice, and group IV: 4 ml/200gBW pomegranate juice. Blood samples were taken from the orbital vein. Examination of MDA level using the TBARS method and AGE level using ELISA method. Statistical tests using paired t-test and oneway ANOVA. Results: Statistical test showed that serum MDA levels decreased significantly in group III (p<0.05), and not significantly in group II and IV (p>0,05). Serum AGE levels in groups III and IV had no significant decrease, whereas in group II the increase is not significant (p>0.05). Conclusion: Pomegranate juice 2 ml/200gBW can significantly reduce, while levels 1 ml/200gBW and 4 ml/200gBW cant significantly reduce serum MDA levels in streptozotocin-induced rats. Pomegranate juice 2 ml/200gBW and 4 ml/200gBW cant significantly reduce serum AGE levels in streptozotocin-induced rats.
