Summary: | The graphic novel Broderies written in 2003 by Marjane Satrapi is the
material object of this thesis. This graphic novel tells stories of its female
characters chattering while enjoying tea after lunch. They share personal stories
about marriage, sex, virginity, affair, to those related to sexual organs. Various
kinds of patriarchal domination are experienced by these woman characters along
their lives such as forced marriage, restriction of mobility, and limited access to
certain knowledge and opportunity of self-improvement. Reading the graphic
novel is the first step of the analysis. Afterwards, categorizing each story told by
the female characters by applying the category offered by Kamla Bhasin about
sectors of women's life which lied under control of men in order to reveal the
various kinds of patriarchal domination. Besides, it is also done the interpretation
of female characters responses against patriarchal domination practices that they
receive. This research reveals the fact that women's sexuality is the sector in
which most patriarchal pressures are being exercised. Moreover, it is also found a
fact how women have control as well upon men through the obscure ways they
take in order to survive and live comfortably under the implementation of
patriarchal values. |
