Although this agent has a broad spectrum of antibacterial effect, it has a sitotoxic effect to odontoblast-like cells as well. Therefore, it may induced inflammation. Inflammation itself means a respond of our body to extinguish any foreign material which already entering the tissue or damaged tissue due to irritations. Pholymorfonuclear cell (PMN) and macrophage are inflammation cells which play a major role of inflammation by phagocyting foreign materials. The objective of this research was to study the effect of chlorhexidine digluconate 2% as a cavity cleanser on the inflammatory cells infiltration on the pulp of Sprague Dawley rats. Sprague Dawley rats were divided into treatment and control groups. A cavity was made with 0,9mm round diamond bur on the occlusal area of the rats� left and right upper first molar. Chlorhexidine digluconate 2% was applied on the cavities of the treatment group while aquadest was applied on the control group�s cavities for fifteen seconds. The rats were sacrificed at 1 hour, 3, 5, and 7 days after treatment. The maxillary tissue of the rats were then processed for histological preparations and stained with Hematoxilin Eosin. PMNs and macrophages were examined using a light microscope with 400x magnification. The data was analyzed using ANOVA and LSD (p<0,05). The results of ANOVA showed that there were significant differences between the treatment and control groups on every exposure times. In conclusion, the application of chlorhexidine digluconate 2% as cavity cleanser induced the inflammatory cells infiltration on the pulp of Sprague Dawyley rats.
