This paper is academic research with the short story �Kikai� by Yokomitsu Riichi (published in 1930) as the object of research. Kikai�s theme is about excessive suspicion adversely impacting others. The main character of this short story is the �I� figure that worked in a factory making nameplates. Suspiciousness of his workmates and fear of the danger of various chemicals to his body causes great anxiety in�I�. Until one day one of his workmates dies from drinking toxic ammonium dichromate. The purpose of this research is to analyze the psychological condition of the �I� figure using the psychoanalysis theory of Sigmund Freud. In this research, the author first analyzes intrinsic elements in this novel and the linkages between these elements using structural analysis. The results showed that his id, ego, and superego were running out of balance. This led to the emergence of anxiety within �I�, and consequently the ego forming a defense mechanism. Defense mechanism used is a displacement, reaction formation, and rationalization. It is raised by the ego to reduce his anxiety.
