Description
Summary:Malocclusion is abnormal dental alignment that causes change on dental arch dimensions. Therefore, it influences the form of dental arch. Dental arch form is an important component to diagnose and plan orthodontic treatment. The aim of this study was to investigate the relation between the degree of malocclusion and maxillary arch form of Javanese people. Fourty five study models of Orthodonsia practicum III Faculty of Dentistry Universitas Gadjah Mada (2013) with these criteria: 1) third generation of Javanese consist of men and women, 2) aged 19 25 years old, 3) complete permanent teeth up to second molar with the Angles Class I first molar relation, 3) crowding, 4) no caries in cups and interproximal area, 5) Not or never been in an orthodontic and orthognatic treatment. Study models degree of malocclusion was measured by Occlusal Feature Index and the results were categorized as mild, moderate or severe. The maxillary arch form was defined by measuring the intercaninus width and depth. The results ratios then were categorized as tapered, square or ovoid. Next, the result scores of malocclusion and the ratios of arch form were analyzed by using Pearson correlation. The result showed there was a negative relation between the degree of malocclusion and maxillary dental arch form of Javanese people with correlation significancy -0,552 (p<0,05). The conclusion was the bigger of the malocclusion scores, the smaller ratios between intercaninus width and depth. It means that the maxillary arch form tends to be tappered. The most common of the arch form was ovoid, followed by square, then tapered.
