Summary: | This research attempts to find out double negatives as one characteristic of
Huckleberry Finn�s English as seen in Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. The aims
of this research are to identify the pattern of negative constructions which has
double negatives in Huckleberry Finn�s English in its structure and describe the
characteristics that make the sentence different from Standard American English.
The data source which are the chapter I until XX of the novel has 114 sentences
which has double negatives in Huckleberry Finn�s English characteristics in its
structure. The result of this research shows that there are 21 patterns of negative
constructions which consists of 3 patterns in present progressive tense, 6 patterns
in simple past tense, 7 patterns in simple present tense, 1 pattern in simple future
tense, 2 patterns in past perfect tense, 1 pattern in both of past perfect progressive
tense and perfect present tense. Furthermore, there are 3 characteristics that make
the data different from Standard American English which are the use of negative
to be, the use of n-word no instead of using any,and the use of past participle
instead of simple form in the negative sentence of simple present tense. |
