Summary:Insulation equipmentis one of important components of the electric power system to maintain the continuity of distribution electrical energy, and to protect electrical equipment from a variety of disorders. Insulators which are commonly installed in Indonesia are ceramic insulators. Nowadays there are many developed technology of polymer insulators that have better insulation resistance than ceramic insulators. The effects of this development are that there are many replacement activities of the ceramic insulator, with the polymer insulator. This activity gave impact on PLN spenditure as the state-owned company that has a monopoly on electricity in Indonesia. Because of that reason a study to improve the durability of ceramic insulation was needed to approach the insulation resistance of the polymer, and the coating method was chosen in this study to meet those needs. The purpose of this study was to investigate the characteristics of ceramic insulators and polymers under high alternating voltage, and to determine the effects of these coatings on insulation resistance of the insulator. By using a high voltage test equipment in the laboratory as a voltage source and the test sample of ceramic and polymeric insulating material (epoxy resin) coated with silicone rubber it were obtained that the effects of silicone rubber coating increasing the insulation resistance and the breakdown voltage of the insulator material. Primarily for insulating ceramic material, silicone rubber coating can avoid the breakdown voltage of insulation failure due to low molecular density of ceramics.
