Summary: | A nation which is now known as a melting pot was not built over a night. American
history has shown a serious crime against humanity called slavery. The practice was finally
abolished after the union won the civil war. Making the slavery illegal, however, did not
neccessarily mean equal rights for African-America. Being freed as slaves, African-American
then became second class citizens in America. They were despised and oppressed through Jim
Crow law. This oppression has caused the raise of African-American movement with their
famous slogan, First Class, whatever it takes. This slogan was interpreted differently different groups. Some believes that first class means having equal rights with the whites, while
some other believes that first class should be understood as being superior towards the whites.
Nation of Islam, established by Fard Muhammad, is using the later interpretation.
The 1964 civil right act marked the success of civil right movement. Discrimination any form is, legally speaking, prohibited. This act raises an expectation that the life quality and
welfare of black people will improve. However, statistics and surveys have proven otherwise.
Consisting at least one fourth of American population, African-American are more likely to live
poorly and go to jail. This condition becomes one of the reason why Nation of Islam, aside from
few ideological adjustments they have made, is still campaigning for separatism and black
supremacy.
This thesis will try to argue that African-American is still facing didcrimination
nowadays. However, this problem is often not addressed publicly because Americanor at least
the majority of white Americanschoose to practice what is called as colorblindness. The
colorblindness believes that assymetrical condition of the people is not something caused race. The thesis will also explain how Nation of Islam deal with discrimination since civil right
movement to the colobrlind era. |
