Summary:Strong economic fundamentals and appropriate government policies have brought Indonesia into a sustainable long-term economic growth. General insurance industry is one of the industries that was positively affected that is indicated by increasing trend in recent years. At least there are 87 general insurance companies in Indonesia that are competing for the same market share. Therefore it is necessary for PT Asuransi Staco Mandiri to have a strategy in order to compete in the Indonesian general insurance industry. This study analyzes the internal and external factors of the company in order to formulate the appropriate business strategy for PT Asuransi Staco Mandiri. External environmental analysis is done by analyzing the general environmental factors and industry competition that can become the opportunities and threats for the company in order to obtain the key success factors in the insurance industry. Analysis of internal environment is done through resource assessment and company capability by using value chain analysis as well as VRIO analysis to get sustainable competitive advantages of the company. Based on the assessment analysis result of the internal and external factors, the formulation of competitive strategy that is most appropriate for PT Asuransi Staco Mandiri is broad differentiation strategy. This strategy emphasizes on differentiation that makes a company to have different characteristics compared to the competition so that customers can be loyal to the company.
