Description
Summary:Eggplant usually was used not only as vegetable, but also for medical purposes because eggplant fruit contained an anti-inflammatory and antibacterial that can inhibit the cancer cells growth, gastritis and respiratory disorders. The high economic value of eggplant leads to many agronomic improvements either conventionally or through biotechnological approaches. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of explant types and BAP concentrations on the in vitro regeneration of seven eggplant cultivars. The treatments were arranged in completely randomized design with three factors. The first factor was explant types, that were leaf explant and epycotyl explant. The second factor was BAP concentrations, that were 1, 2 and 3 mg/l BAP, while the third factor was eggplant cultivars that were Rimbang, Tanteloh, Limao, Hijau lokal Malang, Ungu lokal Malang, Pipit dan Antaboga. The explants were cultured on MS solid medium supplemented with 1, 2 and 3 mgL-1 BAP. Medium containing 1 mgL-1 IBA was used for rooting of regenerated shoot. Cultures environment were 25±10C, 65% humidity, and 2800 lux of cool-white fluorescent light for 16 hours per day photoperiod. Data of morphological characters were collected every ten days during eight weeks after culturing. The result indicated that the leaf explants showed higher response than the epicotyl explants. Shoots formation indicated by swollen on the explants surface followed by emerging light green shoot. Leaf explants cultured on medium supplemented with 3 mgL-1 BAP showed the highest number of shoots and roots. Among the cultivars, Rimbang showed the best response than other cultivars. Rimbang, Tanteloh and Limao were acclimatized successfully and live until the harvest time.
